C-Shift goes to work at 2-alarm apartment fire

By Firefighter Deborah Rothlein
February 10, 2010

On the evening of 2/8/10 T403, BC443, and E403 were dispatched to a garden apartment fire, with reports of fire on a third story balcony. RE433 was added on the second alarm. E421 and R421 arrived onscene of a 4 story garden apartment building, confirming fire on a balcony side C extending to the roof and they would be stretching a line to the upper level. Shortly after placing the line in service, the roof collapsed into the fire apartment resulting in a MAYDAY after one firefighter was thrown from the top floor balcony and believed one of his crew members was trapped under the roof. Fortunately due to the 3 feet of snow on the ground the firefighter suffered only minor injuries and the other firefighters that were reported trapped were quickly accounted for. T403 setup the aerial, threw ground ladders, opened up, provided lights, and of course overhaul. E403 was assigned RIT, threw a ladder, and assisted with the firefighter accountability following the MAYDAY.

RE433 established another water supply which was not an easy task since everything was covered in snow.
