Mr. Bubbles Goes to the District |
January 21, 2008 |
At around 1900 hours Foam 403 was dispatched to assist the District of Columbia with a fire in a tire shop at 12th St. and Florida Ave. NE. Foam 403 responded with Captain Miller, who came in off duty, with Master Technician Rhoads driving him. The fire had been burning since about 1400 hours and once the DCFD decided to attempt to extinguish the fire using foam they reached out for mutual aid from the surrounding jurisdictions. Foam 403 was met at the 3rd St. tunnel and given an escort to the fire ground where it was quickly put to work. Foam 403 was placed as an attack piece to supply 2 ground monitors in the rear of the tire shop. At about 2330 hours, with all of the gauges and most of the valves frozen, it was determined using a pike pole as a dip stick that the 1400 gallons of concentrate was nearly empty. Mr. Bubbles had three "firsts" on this incident including, going to the District for mutual aid, being in position as an attack piece, and pumping out the entire contents of the tank on an incident. Mr. Bubbles welcomed the hard work in the harsh conditions and performed perfectly throughout the operation. The unit was placed back in service around 0300 hours after being refilled at the tank farm. Thanks to the C-team for coming out in the middle of the night in near zero degree wind chill to assist getting Mr. Bubbles back in service. A true team effort!
The fire at 12th and F St. NE was finally brought under control later in the afternoon the following day!
Foam 403 stopped for a photo shoot on the way back home! |

House Fire In Oakton |
January 4, 2008 |
Shortly after 6 a.m., as the B-Team was making relief, Communications put units on the street for the "House Fire" at Jermantown and Oakton Rd. in Co. 34's first due. Initial supplements indicated this was going to be a working fire, as Communications received numerous reports, however none were able to confirm an exact address. As units were checking the area, Engine 434 advised it was going to be on Marseilles Lane off of Oakton Rd. Rescue Engine 433 arrived and assumed first due engine company responsibilities, laying out from Oakton and Marseilles advising the next arriving engine to complete the split to the hydrant. | “A” Shift Provides Some Interesting Info |
December 31, 2007 |
"A" Shift ran into this at a crash on I-66. This vehicle had front end damage that should have caused the front airbags to deploy. When we arrived and saw what appeared to be a partially deployed airbag, we were concerned about the safety hazards for the patient and the firefighters.
In this case, the car had been in a previous crash. When the owner had the car repaired, the airbags were "covered over" but not made functional again.
The Trooper who responded to the crash did some research on whether or not this is a legal practice. Here's what he discovered: Federal law requires all new cars to be manufactured with front airbags...But, once deployed, it is legal to repair a vehicle without restoring the airbags. This is true whether the repairs are done by a legit body shop or shade tree mechanic. However, if the airbags are not functional, the vehicle will not pass inspection in Virginia - so many cars that have been crashed and repaired without restoring the air bags are sent out of state.
The Beanie Babies on the dash were not injured in the crash. |

RESCUE ENGINE & CHIEF IN VIENNA |
October 17, 2007 |
It was a beautiful morning of overtime as the department began our new on-duty CME’s. Everyone on the Rescue Engine was held over from C Shift and we were dispatched as the squad for a house fire in a 2 box off Lawyers road. The fire was in a single family home and not that large but was very smoky and the first in companies had a hard time finding the seat of the blaze. Once they identified the fire in a basement utility space they realized the fire was being gas fed and had spread to the first floor. During this activity the Rescue Engine crew was requested to perform a primary search of the second floor. With zero visibility on all levels of the home, the crew proceeded to the second floor where they split into two search groups where the search proved negative. The fire was extinguished by other companies while we were searching. Firemedic Bowers injured his hand while ventilating and was transported for a few stitches. The rest of crew was re-assigned to overhaul in the area of origin where they located a few hot spots and completed overhaul. We helped the other companies pick up and returned to service just in time to be relieved. Another good effort from the City. Battalion 443 (Ciarrocca) was the 2nd due Chief. |

| CITY IMPLEMENTS FOUR PERSON MINIMUM STAFFING |
October 15, 2007 |
As of 0700 today Fire Chief Tom Owens has implemented four person minimum staffing on Rescue Engine 433 with Engine and Truck 403 to follow in the near future. This comes after the City of Fairfax Fire Department was awarded SAFER Act Grant money at the beginning of 2007 to hire 9 Firefighter/EMT’s and 1 Firemedic. Firefighters have long recognized that four person staffing is much more effective and safer for firefighting operations. Implementing four person staffing is a tremendous enhancement of the fire department’s capabilities.
We would like to express our most sincere gratitude to Mayor Rob Lederer along with the entire City Council and Fire Chief Tom Owens, without their support and dedication this huge accomplishment for the City of Fairfax Fire Department would not have been possible. Captain Richard Miller should also be recognized for his dedication and hard work on preparing the SAFER Act Grant request. |

| B Shift Host Special MDA Birthday |
July 24, 2007 |
Members of B Shift hosted a very special birthday party at FS3 for a very close friend. A young man by the name of Brennan turned 11 today and wanted to spend it with his friends here in the City of Fairfax. Cake was provided by our very own MDA representative Jaime, which proved to be a very tasty mid-afternoon treat. All of B Shift was captivated by the exciting stories Brennan had to share with us from his time at the MDA camp this year, especially how he wore out his horn on his wheelchair.
The City of Fairfax Professional Firefighters and Paramedics Union IAFF Local 2702 has pledged to try to raise $25,000 this year in our “Fill-the-Boot” campaign as well as some other fundraising events we have coming up. We ask for all of your support during these fundraising efforts so we can once again help the MDA find cures for the many diseases so many people face. On August 8th we will be hosting a fund raiser at Club Rain (myspace.com/rainnightclub) at 10418 Main Street here in Fairfax City from 5pm to 3am. “Fill-the-Boot” week is from August 30th to September 3rd. Thanks again to Brennan and his family and Jaime for coming by to let us share his special day. |

| Tractor Trailer Extrication & Rope Rescue in Box 3850 |
July 22, 2007 |
At 0447 hours, Rescue Engine 433-A was dispatched to assist Fairfax County and Prince William County units with a motor vehicle crash on Eastbound Interstate 66 Prior to the Route 29 Exit.
A tractor trailer had left the roadway at a high rate of speed, broken though the guardrail, and traveled down a ravine about 30 feet. The tractor trailer came to rest on its side. The driver was trapped and disoriented as was not responding to Fire & Rescue personnel. In addition, the motor was still running and saddle tank had ruptured and was leaking diesel fuel.
Recognizing the complexity of the situation, Command requested a second Rescue Company be added to the assignment. Communications dispatched Rescue Engine 433 to the scene.
While enroute, Rescue Company 421 (R421) advised that the extrication was nearly complete, but in order to move the patient up the embankment, a stokes basket and haul system would have to be utilized. R421 requested that Rescue 418 be dispatched to undertake that task. Battalion 403 declined the request for Rescue 418 and instead assigned the rope and stokes operation to Rescue Engine 433.
Once on scene, Fire Medic Bill Pittard and Fire Medic Steve Yannucci worked quickly and efficiently to establish a safe work area, provide lighting, and set up a haul system that would be used to move the patient. In short order, the system was rigged and a back-up system was in place and ready to go.
With the system in place, the patient was safely moved to the waiting Price William Medic Unit. This was a great cooperative effort between the 3 agencies. |
